Travel Lightly

Traveling can be a pain these days with so many rules to follow from the TSA. And let's not forget how many airlines charge you for checking even your first bag. How awful is it to have to check a bag at the last minute or have to throw one of your favorite products out? If you're like me, there's at least one splurge item in your beauty routine and it would hurt to have to leave it behind.

I've got some easy tips for making your travel light and hassle free.

First, I started with the Makeup Matte. It's a great holder for brushes and other things like blushes, lipsticks and shadows. It rolls up and is easily thrown into your carry on bag.

Next, is shampoo and conditioner. But Brett, you say, the hotels generally have shampoo and conditioner in the rooms. And while that's true, I would rather have my own and have enough for my long hair. So I took a small travel bottle, poured my shampoo into it and gave it a label. I didn't have another bottle for conditioner, but I had lots of samples of good conditioners that I could make good use of. (Same goes for the LA Fresh makeup remover pads in the first image.)

Foundation is an easy one, because most bottles fall within the 3-4 oz allowance for carry on. I guess I'm just taking the moment to let you know how much I love Make Up For Ever's HD Foundation. (Did you know you can go to Sephora and they can match your skin with a foundation using a scanner? Pretty awesome technology).

Again, I know they have body wash and lotion, but I like the scents I use at home. So, by pulling from my travel sizes, I can continue to smell like myself no matter where I go. (Sorry guys, but this Dark Kiss from Bath & Body Works has been discontinued. Bummer.)

I know Molton Brown makes some small sizes as well and they smell delicious and luxurious. It's all about what you're used to or comfortable with.

And of course I have to brag on my all-time favorite brand of moisturizer and serum: AHAVA. The Time to Hydrate gel moisturizer is fantastic. It hydrates just enough without leaving your face all greasy. And the Dead Sea Osmotor serum has kept my face looking wrinkle free and smooth. I adore both and they're both TSA approved to go in my carry on. YAY!

Last, but not least, I need a sunscreen that will pass, and Goldfaden's Sun Visor is the perfect solution. It has a non aerosol spray and it's  the perfect size. (and SPF 30)

Don't forget to put all your liquids into a quart-sized Ziplock bag for easy inspection! And enjoy that trip!

How to Win as a Woman

La Fresh, maker of convenience wipes for every beauty occasion, has embarked on a mission to promote women empowerment with their Be Good campaign. La Fresh is offering beauty and business tips for women on how best to prepare for major moments in life, like an interview, business meeting, or presentation.

Eve Yen, founder of La Fresh, offers the below tips when preparing for these momentous occasions.

1. Sharpen your confidence by being prepared. Research and learn about the company you are applying to or the topic you are discussing. Educate yourself on things you aren’t familiar with.

2. Knowledge is power that builds confidence. When you are confident, you look confident and you feel good and others will notice that.

3. As Emma Watson spoke about over the weekend during her speech to the U.N. about gender equality and the #HeToShe initiative, don’t alter your goal, mentality, or desired pay based on your gender. Women deserve to be afforded the same opportunities, pay, freedom and education as that of their male counterparts.

4. Have strong character and integrity. Sell yourself but be genuine. You never know what doors may open and you want to make sure you have a good reputation.

5. Positivity will get you places you never thought possible. You can land your dream job. If starting your own business is your dream, don’t put it off – get started today. Don’t be afraid – don’t sell yourself short - you can do it!

6. Make a great first impression – you only get one. Dress for the job you want. Be well groomed, clean and professional. A smile is your best accessory!

You can do what you put your mind to - don't let anyone tell you different. Put your dreams into action by taking the first step!

The Modern Bun

Selena Gomez always looks elegant, and her modern, geometric take on a classic bun is effortless enough to wear to the office, and chic enough to pair with evening wear for a night out! The sleek up do may look complicated, but Keratin Complex International Educator Niki Galanomatis provides tips on how to easily recreate the look at home:

1) Start by distributing a dime size amount of KeraBalm throughout damp hair.
2) Blow dry hair smooth using a Keratin Complex Ceramic + Ionic 3” Round Brush and NEW HydraDry Dual Ion + Ceramic Professional Smoothing Dryer.
3) Brush hair into a smooth ponytail and secure with elastic hair band.
4) Divide the ponytail in two sections. Going in opposite directions, wrap first piece around the hair band and secure with a bobby pins. Continue to wrap the second piece in the opposite direction and secure with bobby pins.
5) Spray hair with Flex Flow Flexible Shaping Hairspray for a light finishing hold.

Stop Aging Your Face Today!

Most of us know skincare basics. We understand that sun, cigarettes, and too much alcohol can contribute to premature aging. La Jolla, California board certified dermatologist Dr. Susan Stuart reveals there are lesser known “evils” that can propel the aging process.

Eating Too Much Sodium
Excess sodium in your diet can suck the moisture out of skin, leaving it dry and dull. To avoid this, cut back on salty treats and invest in a hydrating facial moisturizer.

Facial Expressions
Every time you move that beautiful face, your skin wrinkles a little bit. Most of the time your face bounces back and those little wrinkles disappear once new skin cells grow.

Central heating
Many of us spend a fortune on anti-aging skin products, yet we may regularly accelerate skin aging without even being aware of it. The central heating and air conditioning systems that many of us use at home and at work can severely dry out skin, leading to premature aging and wrinkles. To help keep skin youthful and soft, try turning down the heating and wearing more layers to stay warm. Keeping a glass of water in the room can also increase humidity, while wearing a protective face cream can help relieve dryness.

Soap
While you may think that soap is your skin’s best friend, this is actually not the case. The reason for this is that your skin has an acid mantle which is a natural protective barrier of the skin. When you wash with soap – which is generally alkaline – it can remove this protective layer of oils and dry out the skin, eventually leading to wrinkles. While it is not advisable to stop washing entirely, try swapping the soap for a PH-neutral and chemical-free cleanser, and bear in mind that there is such a thing as over-cleansing your skin.

Your pillowcase
You may think you’re indulging in a bit of beauty sleep when you hit the hay at night; however the opposite could in fact be true. If you regularly sleep with the same side of your face pressed against a cotton pillow case this may cause creases on the skin which can eventually turn to fine lines and wrinkles. To help stay youthful overnight try sleeping on your back instead, or switch to a silk or satin pillowcase to create less compression wrinkles and help maintain skin’s moisture levels.

Not Remembering Your Lips
Three-to-five cellular layers of skin rest upon your lips, so it's important that your beauty regime includes them too. Frequently having dry, chapped lips causes them to age faster. Look for lipsticks and lip balm that contain petrolatum, dimethicone, and glycerine to help keep your smackers hydrated.

Drinking from bottles and through straws
It may be hard to believe but, yes, the puckering process of drinking from a bottle or through a straw. Just like any repeated muscle motion this can lead to fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth. Face cream can help. But dermatologists tell those who are prone to fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth to avoid straws altogether.

Drinking Coffee
Caffeine is a major culprit when it comes to dry skin and the magnification of wrinkles. Quench skin by drinking lots of water. Add fruit slices like orange or lemon to enhance the flavor.

Not Drinking Enough Water
Hydrating yourself daily will not only help to fight off aging, but also give your skin a healthy glow. Skip the water and you’ll be stuck with rough and 'shrunken' skin.

Slouching at work
How often do you find yourself slumped over your desk, hand propped beneath your chin? If the answer is a lot, decreased back and neck pain aren’t the only reasons to sit up straight. “Extreme extension or flexing of the neck from leaning on your chin can stretch the skin there, leading to wrinkling and sagging,” says Dr. Stuart. Looking down for prolonged periods of time while texting or reading may cause or worsen the same damage.

Clarisonic: Hot Offer For Great Skin!

Clarisonic. You've heard of it, I'm sure. But maybe you're not sure what the benefits are - I mean, let's face it, we've been cleaning our face with soap, water and washcloth for years. And that seems to be working OK, doesn't it? Yeah, I thought so, too. And then I was introduced to the Clarisonic. I was a changed woman. (and you can be, too!)

The Clarisonic is a sonic skin cleaning system that removes makeup, pollution and helps you fight the aging process. How much better is it than washing manually? Six times! That's pretty amazing.

However, what sealed the deal for me is the way my face felt after just the first use. It was clean, it was soft, and my serum and moisturizer sunk in so much faster. It was a revelation!

Beauty.com $15 off $75 purchaseNow that I've been using the Clarisonic for over a month, my skin just keep getting better. Less breakouts (yes, I have adult acne, especially during THAT time of the month), less dry patches (OK maybe no dry patches anymore), which has resulted in a much nicer appearance both with and without makeup. And at 36, it's nice to be able to go without makeup and not feel like a hot mess.

You can get the Clarisonic at many retailers, but beauty.com is running a coupon to save you $15 of a $75 purchase. There are several models of Clarisonic, but I believe the $99 Mia, is great and is what I use.

If you've been on the fence about trying the Clarisonic out, now is a great way to check it out at a less expensive price.

Do you have a Clarisonic? I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences with it!

Not Your Mother's - New Products

I must first confess, I love Not Your Mother's dry shampoo. It's one of my favorites that I purchase over and over again. So when I had the opportunity to try some other products from the line, I was all in.

I have been growing my hair out for over a year now. And now that it's gotten long, I am really concerned about the ends staying nice, free from split ends or getting too dried out and looking like straw. That's not a good look for anyone!

However, I tend to have oilier hair that is fine, so the conditioners I choose are normally on the light side to not add to the oily mess that my hair can become, and also not weigh down my fine hair. It's a balance. And Way To Grow delivers!

Way To Grow is a spray leave-in conditioner. It smells great, too! It's not too heavy, not too light. I believe I'm getting the benefit of my hair being easier to comb through, protection for heat styling, and the added benefit of having it stay in my hair all day to continue protecting my hair. I can't see any downside to this! (And it's easy on your wallet at $6 a bottle.)

After I have my conditioner set, I have been trying out Plump For Joy, which is a thickening hair lifter. I can't lie, I was skeptical. How can it both thicken and lift? Well, it can! I put some on the roots and about halfway down my hair. For best results, I'd recommend drying your hair upside down to increase the volumizing effect. And about that thickening? I could really tell a difference when I pulled my hair up into a pony. I was a little shocked!

So, this product might not be a good fit for those of you lucky ladies with already thick, voluminous hair - but it's a win for those of us who struggle with limp, lifeless, thin or fine hair. Again, it's only $6!

Both of these products (and more from the line) are available nationally at CVS, Ulta and Walmart.

Let me know what you think if you try them!

Empties Review - It's All About The Hair!

I've been missing you gals (and guys!) It's that time again to let you know what I've used up and am loving. Oddly, it's all hair products this go around. But thats OK! We have to take care of our hair, too, so let's get started.

I am a big believer in touching up those pesky gray roots at home. I don't know about you, but I don't have time to run to the salon every 2 or 3 weeks to keep the gray away. So, I started doing that at home, when my schedule permits and it's working out great. I'm really loving the Color Brilliance Cream Color from ION. My hair has been highlighted and is quite long now, and I really like the ombre look, so it's easy to choose a color close to my natural hair color and fill in the roots, and achieve a beautiful ombre style.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     Of course, you don't have to do this, because the ION color is great for all over coloring if you're not interested in highlights ( or if you have really short hair) It takes about 45 minutes for the color to process, and I find myself doing the dishes, watching a show, catching up on some reading while it's doing its thing. It's like double tasking! You can find the ION color (and the 20% devloper that mixes with it) at your local Sally Beauty Supply.

Long hair needs some extra pampering, so that it doesn't dry out, break and look scraggly. I've been loving the Matrix Color Bloom Mask. I use it once or twice a week, leave it in for about 5 minutes while I'm finishing up in the shower and it really seems to keep my color looking vibrant and my ends feeling moisturized (which is essential when you're growing your hair out, so you don't end up with lots of split ends that will have to be cut off) You can find this at some drugstores and Ulta stores.

Dry Shampoo, I love you. I became a believer in dry shampoo over the last year and do not know how I functioned without it before. I try different kinds all of the time and just recently finished two bottles. Not Your Mother's dry shampoo is great - the white cast isn't terrible, it smells nice and the bottle is fairly large. I had never tried it before, and I'll definitely purchase it again.

I also went through a bottle of Tresseme Dry Shampoo. I picked this up in a hurry at the grocery store. The price sucked me in - it was cheap and on sale. So I grabbed a bottle and hoped for the best.

I'll be honest, it has a little bit more of a white cast, but it dissipates quickly once you brush it through. It's a great economy option (and is easy to find since it's pretty much everywhere.

Urban Decay Naked Lip Gloss - First Impression

I love a good lip gloss, don't you? But I hate the overly sticky feeling of many and the way my hair gets caught in my lips when the wind blows. Yuck.

I recently got to try the new lip glosses from the Urban Decay Naked line. I was pretty excited!

First, they are so so pretty! All of the colors are in the neutral/naked range - so they are light and perfect for spring. I tried a few and personally, some were a little too light for me - I preferred those with a tiny bit more color - something closer to my natural lip color. Rule34 and Beso fit the bill nicely. Naked is pretty, but just too nude for me.

Second - They smell nice. I'm generally off put by lip products that have funky and/or a chemical smell. Naked glosses smell fresh, with a hint of mint. But nothing so strong it's all you can smell. It's just a nice, clean fresh scent.

Third - They're not overly sticky. This is huge. Glosses appeal to me (and maybe you) because they're easy to apply, give some color and moisturize. But sometimes that moisture comes with stickiness. No thanks. The Naked glosses feel slick when applied - a definite selling point.

Fourth - The applicator is great. It's a paddle applicator and it picks up just the right amount of product so you don't have to double or triple dip to get the right amount of gloss.

Want to get yours? Visit Urban Decay and pick a few up. They're $20 each and come in nine nude shades.

Paint it Forward!

Organ donation is not a subject that usually pops up in casual conversation, something Todd and Tara Storch – founders of Taylor’s Gift Foundation – know well. So ‘Taylor Blue’ was born.

The couple established Taylor’s Gift after losing their 13-year-old daughter, Taylor, in a skiing accident in March 2010. Tay
lor’s Gift supports and promotes official Donate Life organ donor registrations in the United States.

“We knew we needed a ‘conversation starter’ about organ donation,” Tara says. “We’re aware that this isn’t an easy topic for most people, so we decided we needed something that could make it easier to talk about.

“Since our largest support group comes from women 18-44, we decided that a nail polish would be a great way to spark conversation. Taylor had the most beautiful eyes in a gorgeous blue and always got compliments on them, even as a baby. Only a week before the accident, she said to me, ‘Mom, I love the color of my eyes. That’s the color I want for my bridesmaids dresses some day.’ From that point on, that color was precious to us, and there was no question the color of the nail polish would be ‘Taylor Blue.’

“We introduced ‘Taylor Blue’ last year for our Paint It Forward Legacy Gift campaign, hoping it would spark conversation. And boy, did it! Even men painted their thumb!”

April is National Donate Life Month. ‘Taylor Blue,’ created by OPI, will be available for purchase on
www.taylorsgift.org from through the end of April. The 2013 Paint It Forward campaign raised $40,000. ‘Taylor Blue’ was sold and shipped to every state in the United States, every province in Canada, and also had worldwide sales. The goal for 2014 is $100,000.

Net proceeds from Paint It Forward support the mission of Taylor’s Gift and its Legacy Gift program, which provides financial help to families touched by organ donation.

“The name of our Legacy Gift campaign – Paint It Forward – is a play on the words Pay It Forward,” Tara explains. “To us, it means that people are spreading the message of Taylor's Gift with this great tool called ‘Taylor Blue.’ They have the opportunity to help someone else's life one day. This color became the link that made organ donation an easy topic to talk about, discuss and share. And it all started with a conversation on how you can 'outlive yourself.'”

About Taylor’s Gift Foundation

Taylor’s Gift Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Taylor’s Gift Foundation was founded by 2010 with a mission to ‘Regift Life, Renew Health and Restore Families’ by increasing official organ donor registries. Taylor’s Gift Foundation also sponsors the Donate Life Rose Bowl Parade, provides Taylor’s Gift Scholarships to graduating seniors and is launching Taylor’s Legacy Gift Grants to help those touched by organ donation with financial difficulties. Spring Break - Protect your Skin

It's finally here! Spring - and with it comes warmer temperatures and for many of you, spring break! Treat your skin with care and protect it from the damaging rays of the sun with some of the newest and best products on the market today.

Kid Friendly
I know as a kid I hated it when I had to put on sunscreen - that thick white lotion took forever to skin into my skin and I wanted to get back into the water or the sun. Kids today have so many new and wonderful options that won't put them on the sidelines for long.

These Hello Kitty sunscreen sprays are perfect for kids. They offer 30 or 50 SPF and come in fun scents like Pineapple and Kiwi - no kid will be able to resist. Even wiggle worms will be covered in no time with a few sprays that work on both dry and wet skin.

Face Friendly
Your pretty face needs protection, but please don't slather body sunscreens on it. Use something specifically for the face, like La Roche-Posay's Anthelios 30. It's a cooling water-lotion that will protect and refresh skin without clogging pores or causing breakouts. Because let's face it, a breakout is never wanted! I love this because it melts into skin almost immediately, leaving no residue behind.

A Little Bronzing
Unless you've been tanning all winter (and really, is that good for your skin?) your legs might be a little pasty for spring break. No worries. Australian Gold offers sunscreen (15-30SPF) with bronzer to protect and add a hint of color so you won't blind everyone when you step out into the sun for the first time this year. Bonus: It smells great, too.

After Sun
Mistakes happen. Did you get a little too much sun? Even if skin just feels tight and itchy, Alba Bontanica's Very Emollient After Sun Lotion will soothe, hydrate and replenish skin. Made from 85% aloe vera and no parabens, phthalates or synthetic fragrances, you can feel good about putting this on anyone in the family.

February Favorites

I've been rekindling my love with some forgotten products and here they are:

1. Clean & Clear Oil-Free Shine Control Moisturizer
This is a great light moisturizer for the day that helps keep oil slicks away. I see this becoming my daily go-to product over the next few months as it warms up. I still use a heavier moisturizer at night and my day and night serums, but this is an excellent day lotion.

2. Londontown Lakur nail color in Thames from the Eye
I've been wearing this on my toes for a while now. I love the color. It's unique and sophisticated and fun - plus it reminds me of ocean water which has been nice during the crazy weather we've been having. But, the best thing about this polish it its staying power. It really lasts! I will be looking into getting some additional colors once my obsession with this turquoise color fades.

3. Ahava Dead Sea Osmoter™Concentrate
This is my holy grail serum. I'm sure I've mentioned it before, but it bears repeating. It's amazing. So light and silky feeling, but it really helps hold moisture in my skin. I can tell if I forget to use it. It's perfect to use day and night along with your preferred day and night cream. It lasts a long time - I've been using mine for about 2 months now and have not had to replace it yet. So, while it's a bit pricey (about $60) - it's worth it because it will last you at least a couple of months, bringing the price down considerably each month.

January Favorites

I know, I know, I'm very behind. Life got busy and even though I had it on my schedule to share with you my January Favorites, taking the time to do so was a challenge. But we're here now, so let's get on with it!

1. Jordana Twist and Shine
I know the Revlon Balm Stains are all the rage now, but you've got to try the Jordana Twist and Shine Moisturizing Balm Stains. They're pretty awesome. And they're cheap! I get compliments every time I wear them. You can find them at your local Walgreens. Honey Love and Cranberry Crush are both very wearable for most skin tones.

2. Lush Rose Jam Shower Gel
I know I've told you about this shower gel before, and I kinda feel bad bringing it up again since it's no longer available on the Lush site, but it is so amazing. I used up an entire 32oz bottle of it over the last month and started in to my second 32oz bottle. It smells so good and I even use it every now and again as a shampoo, because the rose fragrance is unbelievable and stays with me all day. I understand why people love the bath bombs and bubbleroons so much now. If you ever have the opportunity to get your hands on this shower gel, do it! I promise you won't be disappointed.

3. Not Your Mother's Dry Shampoo
Anytime I can skip a shampoo, I'm all for it. And Not Your Mother's lets me do that on a regular basis. I just spray on any part of the roots that are starting to look greasy, give it a few minutes to soak up the oil and brush out. Bonus tip: You can also use this dry shampoo on freshly washed and dried hair to add volume and body if you have limp or fine hair. Sometimes when my hair is too clean it just doesn't want to do anything but lay limp. Not anymore!

4. Say Yes To Cucumbers Face Towelettes
We all know it's important to take your makeup off at night. I know this. But sometimes, in a pinch, I resort to facial cleansing wipes to speed up the process. I like the travel size  to throw in my purse in case a long day has my eyes aching for makeup relief. These wipes fit the bill; they take off makeup in a snap and leave my face feeling and smelling fresh and clean. There are no harsh ingredients and my skin seems to love them.

‘Moonbow’ Nail Design Created by Celebrity Manicurist Elle for Dermelect ‘ME’ at the Cynthia Rowley Fall 2014 Presentation on Wednesday, February 12th at the Diamond Horseshow in NYC.

“Cynthia’s key word describing the inspiration of her collection was ‘moonbows,’ a reflection on the romanticism of her sporty chic line for the Fall 2014 season,” says Elle. “Representing a rainbow of darker shades not using any primary colors, we layered two shades from the same color family on one nail, beginning with a darker red, to orange, yellow, green, indigo and purple to achieve the perfect ‘moonbow’.”

NYFW Fall 2014 - Ouidad and Tracy Reese

Ouidad’s team of Curl Experts returned to New York Fashion Week for the second consecutive season as the official hair care sponsor of Tracy Reese’s Fall 2014 show at Center 548 on Sunday, February 9th.

Photos by Will Ragozzino

The inspiration for the hair look was “individual beauty,” which perfectly mirrors Ouidad’s advocacy for embracing one’s self and natural hair texture. Creative Director, Morgan Willhite led the Ouidad stylists as they created a variety of bold, emotional and textured styles exclusively for the Tracy Reese runway.

The Ouidad stylists created individualized looks that incorporated different hair parts, inconsistent wave patterns, free flowing strands, a windblown “halo” effect and natural texture. To achieve these looks, the stylists used Wave Create Sea Spray, PlayCurl Volumizing Styling Spray, 8.5 oz, Styling Mist Setting & Holding Spray, Shine Glaze Serum, Moisture Lock Leave-In Conditioner and Salon Series by Ouidad Mongongo Oil Multi-Use Hair Treatment.

“Bold, naturally textured styles are all the rage right now and will continue to be a growing trend.  These styles can be recreated on all hair types and these effortless looks can be achieved easily with the appropriate styling products and tools,” says Ouidad Creative Director Morgan Willhite.
